SURVEY: LATINOS REJECT RUBIO APPROACH TO CLIMATE CHANGE, CLEAN ENERGY

Poll Shows Latinos Overwhelmingly Support Obama Call For Action on Industrial Carbon Pollution

WASHINGTON (February 19, 2013) – About three out of four Latinos believe that climate change is a serious problem and a substantial majority support President Obama using his authority to reduce its main cause: dangerous carbon pollution, according to a national poll of 1,218 registered voters conducted after last week’s State of the Union speech for the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). The poll included an oversample of 183 Latinos.

The survey findings are a clear rejection of the dismissive tone taken by Senator Marco Rubio in his response to Obama’s State of the Union address. Rubio shrugged off the need for action on climate change, saying “our government can’t control the weather.”

Latinos clearly disagree with Rubio, with a strong majority convinced that action is needed soon to reduce a real threat of climate disruption.

Released on the heels of the hottest year ever in the U.S. and one marked by extreme weather, the poll of Latinos conducted by Public Policy Polling for NRDC found:

* 74 percent of Latinos believe climate change is a serious or very serious problem, a higher level than the 65 percent among all American adults.
* 68 percent of Latinos support the president using his authority to reduce dangerous carbon pollution, including 60 percent of all American adults.
* 69 percent of Latinos agree with the president’s statement that “for the sake of our children” and our future, we must do more to combat climate change, compared to 62 percent of all American adults.

Adrianna Quintero, director of Voces Verdes, said: “These poll findings clearly show that President Obama speaks for Latinos on climate and clean energy issues. Latinos do not agree with Sen. Rubio that we should stand by and do nothing in the face of the ravages of climate change. The best way to strike back is to reduce the dangerous carbon pollution from our dirtiest power plants, the single greatest threat to our climate’s future. Latinos are counting on bold action and leadership– for the sake of all of America’s children.”

Other key poll findings include the following

* 64 percent of Latinos agreed with Obama’s promise to make addressing climate change a priority in his second term.
* 74 percent of Latinos think that climate change is already a problem or will become a problem in the near future.
* A clear majority of Latinos (65 percent) agree with the vast majority of scientists that Superstorm Sandy, drought and wildfire are the effects of climate change. More than two thirds of Latinos (67 percent) said the country should do more to address climate change, including 51 percent of independents, while just 14 percent said we’re doing enough already.

Tom Jensen, director of Public Policy Polling, said: “This survey certainly debunks any notion that Sen. Rubio is the voice of Latinos on climate change. What is perhaps most striking in the findings is that Latinos back President Obama’s climate change and clean energy agenda even more strongly than it is embraced by the broad cross-section of American adults. Right across the line, Latinos see climate change as a serious problem happening right now that requires an engaged President who takes the initiative to crackdown on industrial carbon pollution.”

The extreme weather events of 2012, from record heat waves to large-scale drought, from raging wild fires to Hurricane Sandy, raised public awareness of climate change and public support for taking action to address climate change and one of its chief causes: industrial carbon pollution from power plants.

Last year, the president started down the road to addressing climate change by announcing standards for cleaner cars and trucks, and by proposing carbon pollution limits for new power plants. More than 3.1 million Americans submitted public comments last year in support of strong limits on carbon pollution from new power plants. Polling by Small Business Majority found 87 percent of small business owners supported adopting stronger fuel standards, and by a 3:1 margin, small business owners across the nation support the EPA regulating carbon emissions that cause climate change.

Today, the hundreds of power plants across the country have no restrictions on the carbon pollution they emit into the atmosphere. NRDC has offered one way for President Obama to use his authority to significantly cut carbon pollution by 26 percent by the end of this decade.

The low-cost, high-benefit plan would create thousands of clean energy jobs making homes and buildings more energy efficient while protecting people from asthma attacks and heart ailments and  saving families as much as $700 a year in electricity bills. More information about this plan can be found http://www.nrdc.org/air/pollution-standards/.

The overall NRDC poll has a margin of error of +/- 2.8%

KERRY WASHINGTON TO RECEIVE PRESIDENT'S AWARD AT 44th NAACP IMAGE AWARDS

Presentation to Trailblazing Actress and Activist
To Be Made During Live Broadcast on Feb. 1, 8-10 p.m. EST on NBC

LOS ANGELES, CA (January 18, 2013) – Kerry Washington will be presented with the NAACP President's Award at the 44th  NAACP IMAGE AWARDS, broadcast live from 8-10 p.m. ET (PT tape-delayed) on Feb. 1 on NBC, it was announced today by the NAACP.

The NAACP President’s Award, chosen by NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous, is bestowed in recognition of special achievement and distinguished public service.  Past honorees include Van Jones, President Bill Clinton, Soledad O'Brien, Ruby Dee, Muhammad Ali, and most recently, the Founding Members of the Black Stuntmen’s Association.

“For the first time in 40 years, we have a black woman playing the leading role in a primetime drama on network television. Kerry Washington is a modern trailblazer,” states Jealous.  “Her talent and will have taken her to heights we have not seen in years. She extends the tradition of women like Ruby Dee, Cicily Tyson, and Lena Horne. Rather than seeing her professional success as cause for political silence, she has chosen to use it as a platform for social change. Her championing of the rights of women around the world, and her early work to campaign for President Barack Obama are examples of her willingness to be a politically active and risk-taking woman in real life even as she plays one on TV.”

NAACP award-winning actress, Kerry Washington, is a versatile and fearless actress with an impressive and diverse body of work.  With the critical and commercial success of her most recent projects (Django Unchained and ABC’s Scandal) garnering industry-wide acclaim, as well as her involvement with President Obama’s re-election campaign, Washington has proven herself to be an emerging power player in Hollywood as well as a social and political activist within the community.

Washington is an active member of the V-Counsel, an esteemed group of advisors to V-Day, the global movement to end violence against women and girls, and she serves on the board of Voices of a People’s History, a non-profit arts and education group.  She also sits on the Artist’s Committee for the largest national advocacy association for the arts, Americans For The Arts.  In 2008, Washington received several accolades including the Women’s Project Women of Achievement Award, the GWU Alumni Association’s Recent Alumni Achievement Award, and the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Phoenix Award, for Washington’s commitment to social advocacy. In 2009, Washington received the US Conference of Mayors Artist-Citizen Award for public leadership in the arts.  That year she was also named a member of President Obama’s Committee for the Arts and Humanities, headed by First Lady Michelle Obama.

Originally from The Bronx, New York, Washington is a graduate of The Spence School. In 1998, she graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from The George Washington University.

The NAACP Image Awards are being produced by Reginald Hudlin and Brad Lachman. Bill Bracken will serve as Supervising Producer and Byron Phillips as producer. The production team also includes Tony McCuin as director and Melanie Massie as the talent executive.  The live show will originate from The Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

LOS ANGELES (January 15, 2013) — Veteran writer, director, producer and actor Carl Reiner, along with seven-time SAG Award® winner and 18-time nominee Alec Baldwin, will present the SAG 49th Life Achievement Award to Dick Van Dyke at the 19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, executive producer and director Jeff Margolis announced today.
SAG-AFTRA is honoring Van Dyke for his career achievement and humanitarian accomplishments. Past recipients of the Life Achievement Award include Mary Tyler Moore, Ernest Borgnine, Betty White, James Earl Jones, Charles Durning, Julie Andrews, Shirley Temple Black, James Garner, Karl Malden, Clint Eastwood, Edward Asner, Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee, Sidney Poitier, Kirk Douglas, Elizabeth Taylor, Angela Lansbury, Robert Redford and George Burns.

In 1961, Reiner and Van Dyke collaborated together on “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” which Reiner created, based on his experiences as a comedy writer, and in which he co-starred as the toupee-wearing producer, Alan Brady. The series, which broke new ground in television and is said to have ushered in the golden age of the situation comedy, would become one of the most famous and best loved sitcoms in television history. Adored by audiences and critics alike, the series earned four Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy® Awards during the show’s five-year run, seven Emmys and a nomination for Reiner, three Emmys for Van Dyke and two Emmys and a nomination for co-star Mary Tyler Moore (recipient of the 2012 Life Achievement Award). In 2004, Reiner executive produced and co-starred in “The Dick Van Dyke Show Revisited,” which CBS Television produced along with TV Land. Among Reiner’s many other notable credits: directing “The Jerk,” “All of Me” and “Oh, God!”; performing in “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World,” “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid” and the “Ocean’s” movies opposite George Clooney and Matt Damon; and authoring such books as “Enter Laughing,” “All Kinds of Love” and “How Paul Robeson Saved My Life.”

Baldwin is the recipient of seven Screen Actors Guild Awards. This year, he is a two-time nominee for his role as Jack Donaghy on “30 Rock” and as a member of the cast. He began his career on the NBC soap opera “The Doctors” and later starred in “Knots Landing.” He has appeared in more than 40 films including “Beetlejuice,” “Working Girl,” “The Hunt for Red October,” “Glengarry Glen Ross,” “The Cooler,” for which he was Oscar nominated, and “It’s Complicated,” with Meryl Streep. Baldwin was most recently seen opposite Tom Cruise in “Rock of Ages” and heard as the voice of North in the animated feature “Rise of the Guardians.” Later this year, he’ll star in the Woody Allen comedy “Blue Jasmine” opposite Cate Blanchett. Baldwin is a dedicated supporter of numerous causes related to public policy and the arts. As the inaugural SAG Foundation ambassador, Baldwin is helping to raise awareness of the Foundation's philanthropic programs and to encourage support and contributions from those within the industry as well as the general public.

The Emmy-winning Van Dyke made his television-acting debut in 1957 and Broadway debut in 1959. The following year his career soared when he was cast opposite Chita Rivera in the Broadway production of “Bye Bye Birdie.” His performance as Albert Peterson earned Van Dyke a Tony® Award and brought him to the attention of Reiner, who signed him for a pilot opposite newcomer Moore. In 1963, Van Dyke spent his series’ hiatus shooting the film version of “Bye Bye Birdie” in 1963 followed by “What a Way to Go” and Disney’s 1964 musical classic “Mary Poppins,” which won five Academy Awards®, including one for star Julie Andrews (recipient of the 2006 Life Achievement Award). Van Dyke earned a Golden Globe® nomination and, with Andrews, a Grammy®. A run of films followed including “Lt. Robin Crusoe, USN,” “Divorce American Style,” “Fitzwilly,” “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” and “The Comic,” directed by Reiner, among others. He returned to movies again in 1979’s “The Runner Stumbles,” 1990’s “Dick Tracy” and more recently, the Ben Stiller comedy “Night at the Museum” (2006). On the small screen, his numerous roles include the crime-solving physician Dr. Mark Sloan in “Diagnosis: Murder,” which ran from 1993 to 2001. The ever-energetic Van Dyke has written several books and in 2000, formed Dick Van Dyke & the Vantastix, an a cappella quartet. Among the venues they’ve played are the Disney Concert Hall and Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., with the President and First Lady in the front row.

For nearly 20 years Van Dyke has been committed to volunteering at Los Angeles’ century-old shelter, The Midnight Mission. He helped raise millions for their new building program and is there every Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and times in between offering comfort and cheer. He is passionate about raising funds for music and art programs for public schools and became a spokesperson for the National Reye’s Syndrome Foundation in 1967 after losing a granddaughter to that disease. In 2010, he was named the first spokesperson for the Cell Therapy Foundation.
