A NIGHT OF COOL COMEDY, HOT CUISINE, AND FUNDRAISING FOR SCLERODERMA RESEARCH FOUNDATION

Bob Saget, Bill Bellamy, Dana Delany, Alan Thicke, Scott Bakula were just some of the many celebrities that came out to support a fun night of fundraising for Scleroderma Research Foundation (SRF) held on May 25, 2010 at the Four Seasons Beverly Wilshire Hotel, Beverly Hills, California.

A flavorful Mexican-style dinner of ceviche, sweet corn tamales, and baked chicken was served to active auction participants who bid tens of thousands of dollars on travel packages to Wimbledon 2011, a week in Napa Valley, and a variety of other wonderful adventures during a live auction using fancy electronic hand-held devices located at each table.

Comedians Bill Bellamy and Sarah Silverman kept the crowd in a cheerful, laughing mood.

Scleroderma is a very unpredictable and debilitating disease that disproportionately affects women between the ages of 20 and 50, but can affect men and children also of all ages and across all ethnic boundaries.  The disease has no cure and cannot currently be prevented.   It is a chronic life-threatening disease known for damaging the blood vessels and internal organs as well as the skin.

SRF seeks to raise funds for research into prevention, cure, or at least slowing the progress of the disease in patients diagnosed with it.  To date, SRF has raised more than $28,000,000 in order to fund research at respected medical institutions including Dartmouth, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, and Stanford.

Dr. Fredrick Wigley, Director of  Johns Hopkins Scleroderma Center in Baltimore, Maryland gave a speech on the challenges Scleroderma patients face as well as the vital role medical research plays in discovering new treatments for the disease.

FILM INDEPENDENT ANNOUNCES JONATHAN GOLD, QUINCY JONES AND PAUL REUBENS AS ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE FOR 2010 LOS ANGELES FILM FESTIVAL


LOS ANGELES (May 17, 2010) – Today Film Independent, the non-profit arts organization that produces the Spirit Awards, the Los Angeles Film Festival, and year-round artist development programs and exhibition events, announced additional official film selections and programming for the 2010 Los Angeles Film Festival, presented by the Los Angeles Times. The Festival will run from Thursday, June 17 to Sunday, June 27 in downtown Los Angeles, with its central hub at L.A. LIVE.

LA Weekly’s Pulitzer Prize-winning restaurant critic Jonathan Gold, legendary music artist Quincy Jones, and comedian, actor and writer Paul Reubens, will serve as this year’s Artists in Residence, with each introducing a film that has inspired their work, followed by a conversation after the screening. Paul Reubens has selected Frank Capra’s You Can’t Take It With You (1938). In addition, a 25th anniversary screening of Pee Wee’s Big Adventure will be held on June 26th at the Orpheum Theatre. Jonathan Gold has selected Katsuyuki Motohiro’s Udon (2006), and Quincy Jones has selected Steven Spielberg’s The Color Purple (1985).

“All of our incredible guest artists have evolved career paths rooted in an intense and fearless passion for their art. It’s such a gift to the Festival to have them come and share their stories, influences, and inspirations with our audiences,” said Festival Director Rebecca Yeldham.

“The Los Angeles Film Festival is continually dedicated to supporting filmmakers, so we’ve created a new signature event to help them navigate the changing marketing and distribution landscape. In collaboration with filmmaker Jon Reiss, we’ve developed a two-day boot-camp for our Festival filmmakers, as well as a public event, so artists can take charge and better understand how to harness new distribution options and their social networking community,” said Film Independent’s Director of Education Maria Bozzi.

Passes to attend the Festival are currently available for Film Independent members and the general public. Turner Classic Movies had their first classic film festival at  Grauman's Chinese Theatre.  It was, in a sense, "Old-Hollywood" being brought to "Present-Day-Hollywood" at The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, where the first Academy Awards were held.  Tony Curtis, who is known for Some Like It Hot and a slew of other films such as, Spartacus, The Sweet Smell Success, and Persuaders was present for a his book signing.   "Art is the life-force for me.  It’s a passion in my spirit that keeps my thoughts elevated”, stated Curtis. Curtis, who lives in Seven Hills, overlooking Las Vegas, Nevada, has his own studio on his estate where he creates his art.

Other celebrities who attended the festival included, Esther Williams and Ernest Borgnine.

Dizzy D Flashy Releases New Video for "Tha Truth" on Youtube

Las Vegas very own hip-hop artist,  Dizzy D Flashy is once again headed back to New York City to appear on 106 & Park for the Wild Out Wednesday All Stars on August 18, 2010.  Although, before he makes his next appearance on stage at BET he has been invited to perform on the biggest independent showcase the industry will see this year.  It is confirmed that Dizzy D Flashy will be in the line-up and perform at the "Blaze The Stage" 2010 Invitational Showcase on August 7, 2010 at the Symphony Space Theater in New York City.  This is a remarkable accomplishment for a 100% unsigned independent artist!
 
Since his debut performance on BET's 106 & Park earlier this year in January which he won with record breaking votes, Dizzy D Flashy has been working diligently in the studio.  He has recorded dozens of new songs as he prepares to move forward with plans to release an independent record later this year.  (That is unless a major that is serious comes forward before then) For now, the young artist explains that he is only interested in continuing to build his fan base and internet presence as he prepares for his upcoming performances in New York City.  While staying focused on his upcoming performances, he has also been working on his second mix-tape which is currently untitled and due for release in early July.  Available on the internet now is his first mixtape "The Takeover".

“Oscar® Noir” Has “Shadow of a Doubt”

Beverly Hills, CA — Alfred Hitchcock’s favorite among his dozens of films, “Shadow of a Doubt” will be screened as the next feature in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ “Oscar Noir: 1940s Writing Nominees from Hollywood’s Dark Side” on Monday, May 17, at 7:30 p.m. at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater. The film will be introduced by screenwriter Dick Clement (“The Bank Job,” “Across the Universe”).
Based on the Oscar-nominated story by Gordon McDonell, “Shadow of a Doubt” is the tale of a young girl who discovers her namesake “Uncle Charlie” may not be the man he claims to be.
At 7 p.m. the noir cartoon short “Showdown” (1942), starring Superman, and the first installment in the 1941 serial “Adventures of Captain Marvel” will be screened as part of the evening’s pre-feature program.

A few years after his release from prison however, Hollywood released a blockbuster film entitled "American Gangster."  The film not only distorted Atkinson's historical role in the international drug trade, but falsely depicted a snitch by the name of Frank Lucas as the pioneer of the Asian heroin connection.

Under the cover of the Vietnam War and through the use of the U.S. military infrastructure, Atkinson masterminded an enterprising group of family members and former African American GIs that the DEA identified as one of history's ten top drug trafficking rings. Ike's organization moved heroin from Thailand to North Carolina and beyond during its period of operation from 1968 to 1975. It is believed the gang trafficked about $400 million worth of illegal drug sales during that period. 

Unlike most drug tales, "Sergeant Smack" does not glorify violence and murder.  It's not a grimy street tale of drug hustling but an insider's view into an enterprise that flourished right under Uncle Sam's nose on military bases from coast to coast.

To date, Atkinson is best described as a man who exuded southern hospitality, with family sensibilities.  A true mastermind, his operational base extended across borders and was run like a smooth running business.  A dedicated military man, even today many of the now retired law enforcement officials, who originally operated to put him behind bars, still remember and refer to him as a "gentleman."  

Notorious for the span, scope and inner workings of his operation none-the-less, Sergeant Smack's criminal activities sparked the creation of a special DEA unit code named CENTAC 9, which conducted an intensive three-year investigation across three continents. Atkinson proved so elusive; it took the unlikely discovery of his palm print on a kilo of heroin to finally take him down.  
With the release of non-fiction read, "Sergeant Smack," both Atkinson and Chepesiuk hope to finally set the record straight about the Asian heroin connection in the '70's.  Atkinson, who feels slighted by Lucas' distortion about that turbulent period during the prime of their lives is publicly challenging Lucas to a sit-down discussion to reminisce and compare notes.   
The recent movie, "American Gangster," which depicted the criminal career of Frank Lucas, greatly distorted Atkinson's historical role in the international drug trade. "Sergeant Smack" exposes the lies about the Ike Atkinson-Frank Lucas relationship and documents how Ike, not Lucas, pioneered the Asian heroin connection, with intelligence and not violence.  
"I, along with Lucas, played a crucial role in a significant part of American, be it, gangster history," Ike explained. "What's done is done.  But for Lucas to twist and distort the truth in an effort to manipulate history for his own personal gain is just as despicable as the drug dealing we were both engaged in.  We are both just old men now.  But I am anxious to sit down with him and a third party reporter and chat about old times.  I seriously doubt if he will want to do it.
